This video features TextNow’s new home, Evolv1: Canada’s first carbon net positive building. Evolv1 is located in the heart of Waterloo’s Idea Quarter district, as part of the David Johnston Research + Technology Park (R+T Park) at the University of Waterloo. It generates more energy than it uses through an innovative geothermal well system and more than 2,000 solar panels. The building’s other green features include a 40,000-litre cistern for rainwater harvesting, and a 40-foot living plant wall. Evolv1 is targeting LEED Platinum status.

TextNow, a high-growth, locally founded company that sells low-cost mobile phones and cloud-based wireless and data service, occupies 40,000 square feet of the facility. The layout the company chose came about with plenty of employee consultation to truly articulate their culture; it’s spacious, bright, open, and even has a “pub” complete with beer tap and fireplace.
